In honor of the 5th anniversary of my original Top 10 Greatest Bands of All Time article, I'm leaving it up to Newsvine to tell the world who the greatest bands are this time.
Here's how my list went down:
10. The Doors
9. Van Halen
8. The Police
7. U2
6. Genesis
5. Queen
4. The Eagles
3. Pink Floyd
2. Led Zeppelin
1. The Beatles
There were some complaints throughout, such as the inclusion of Genesis, as well as the exclusion of some bands based on their influence and/or innovation. (i.e. Velvet Underground)
So, I'm leaving it up to you, Newsvine, to nominate and vote for the greatest bands of all time. I figured that this would be the way it would work:
• Nominate the band you think deserves the title of being one of the Top 10 Greatest Bands in the nomination thread below. (You may nominate more than one.) I will close nominations at about 6:30 a.m. on Friday Just closed, at which time I will then create a poll optioning most, if not all, of the nominations, depending on their relevance.
• Once the poll is up, the Newsvine body can vote for which band they think is the greatest band of all time. Voting will be open for about a week when voting will then be closed.
• After the week long voting period, I will write an article listing the top 10 bands Newsvine 'elected'.
Now all you 'viners who want their musical tastes heard have the chance! After you nominate, why don't you share some other bands you enjoy as well?
_______________________________________________________________________________________
Due to so many, nominations are no longer being accepted. And, because of so many of them, I am going to randomly group the bands into groups of 15 for the community to decide who deserves to go on. From there, a new article with the winning bands will then have a poll for you to vote on. After that process hopefully the whole thing will be finished!
Nirvana, The Ramones, X.
Sonic Youth
Yes X!
Good pick
I have to think about this a bit. :)
Nirvana.
Led Zeppelin
The Who
Led Zep's already on the list but imho the Who should rank just behind the Beatles along with the Stones. I would also add the Jimi Hendrix Experience.
Hmmm. Greatest bands of all time? Ellington and Basie's Orchestras better be on the list. The crew that played with Miles on Kind of Blue comes to mind almost immediately as well.
I think someone might also argue for Glen Miller, but I won't go that far.
Fleetwood Mac
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
I am with you Roan; The Who is one of the all time greats
Tom Waits :D
How did I forget Tom Waits? Great choice Se!
The Beatles
Ramones
Velvet Underground
Talking Heads
The Clash
The Box Tops
The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band
The Patti Smith Group
The Beatles
Velvet Underground
Pink Floyd
Abba
Abba? What? You're @!$%#ting me! Abba? Really? No, ok, not Abba then.
Cream
Frank Zappa
The Stooges
The Doors
Sex Pistols
The Pixies
The Ramones
The Pixies
Arggh, how I forgot to add the Pixies, I don't know. Good addition.
The Sex Pistols!??! Really, why? Definitely The Clash, maybe even the Ramones but the Sex Pistols..
Talking Heads and Radiohead. Besides that Pink Floyd should be higher than Led Zeppelin, and the Doors deserve to be higher than The Eagles.
Pink Floyd should be higher than Led Zeppelin
That sentence alone is worth the price of admission.
I would add Black Flag in the punk category.
The Yardbirds
Cream
The Jeff Beck Group (1968-69)
Chicago
Buffalo Springfield
Grateful Dead
CSN&Y
Booker T & the MG's
The Traveling Willburys
Florida A&M
and....Roy Buchanan and the Snakestretchers
Just to endorse, the Pixies are at the top of my list.
But I must say that I think of the entire Pixies, Frank Black, and Frank Black & the Catholics catalogs as of one piece: all of it flows from the mind of Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson IV. For my money he is by far the greatest pop songwriter in the history of rock.
The original Guns N' Roses
In your next article you should define what you mean by "greatest"-- I have my own definition, and I'm not sure it would match up with yours. I will say that there are bands that I like that seem to have stood the test of time, or influenced other bands, or just stand out for their sheer (although sometimes unrecognized) awesomeness.
In the interests of diversifying from the standard Beatles/Zeppelin/Velvet Underground nominations, allow me to throw out some other bands for consideration:
Not sure if anyone would agree that they're in the top ten, (I'm not sure they're even all in MY top ten) but they're at least worthy of consideration.
And since you suggested "why don't you share some other bands you enjoy as well?" can I take a moment to pimp the 2007 Newsvine Music Exchange?
I'd go along with Rundgren, Yes, Aerosmith and the Kinks. Not sure about Mountain. This lists are fun but kind of meaningless really. But I'm shocked that no one's mentioned the Amboy Dukes or Mitch Ryder for that Motor City Madness yet. Perhaps a top tens in different genres would be apt. Bowie's also very high on my list.
Black Sabbath introduced a new wave almost as much as Zepplin.
I saw Mountain at the Galaxy theater a couple years ago...They were like old men still trying to rock out...LOL. They might have been good in their day but that was the first I'd ever heard of them and their performance lacked energy.
Black Sabbath just took standard rock harmonies, moved them down a whole note into the Locrian VII to get that weird V and thus was born a whole genre. Ya ha! Take terrible playing, play in an obscure musical mode guaranteed to make everything sound weird, add pretentious Grand Guignol visuals, scream like raped apes and there's Sabbath.
You might consider Primal Scream, Nine Inch Nails, Jefferson Airplane, The Streets, The Who, The Kinks, Outkast, the Allman Brothers, and Blind Faith. I know some of these could be above. Sorry about that!
the Allman Brothers
Good for you Cliff.
voted up for outkast
Pink Floyd
Jefferson Airplane
David Bowie (does single players count as a band?)
Jimi Hendrix
The Rolling Stones
Lynard Skynard
Queen
Sting & the Police
Did we all leave out Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix?
I guess that this depends on what factors are used: influence, personal preference, or general acceptance. Each or all could influence me to vote for the best of all time, even if I would not enjoy them personally, or believe that other music is more interesting or better for me. For my tastes and views, most of the bands identified by you and the posts above qualify in at least one of these categories.
Sorry to be so analytical. My bad!
Great article and thread.
Toto
Steely Dan
Dire Straits
Finally a Steely Dan fan, thank you! I'll second all three of Arne's picks and add one Buffalo Springfield.
How in the world has no one mentioned Bob Dylan or Elvis Presley yet? Don't consider them "Bands"? Are we really that pedantic?
Dylan doesn't meet my definition of "greatest" and Elvis, while certainly deserving of it... I just can't get behind him as one of the greatest given how much my mother worshiped him. Sorry. I just can't put anyone in my Mom's top ten in my top ten. It'd be downright sacrilegious.
If Dylan doesn't live up to "greatest" then I can't really imagine who would...he is by far the most important to the emergence of rock and roll as we know it now...man, even Zappa was so impressed by him that Zappa feared he'd have nothing left to do if Dylan was successful. Elvis paved the way for white people to listen to rock, but Dylan actually pioneered the folk genre, before Dylan folk music meant only songs that were hundreds of years old. Also, singer-song writer, did not exist before him. And as offensive to my ears as Dylan's voice is, who do you think Lou Reed is trying to emulate when he sings?
If I had a hammer... there'd be no more folk music.
I say this as a man who owns several Dylan albums, including the boxed anthology of his work-- Dylan's inability to sing and/or enunciate disqualifies him as falling into the category of "greatest band of all time", in my opinion. Great song-writer, lousy performer. I'd rather clean my ears with an icepick than listen to an hour of Dylan. Of course, it's just an opinion.
And I'm sorry, my Mom loved Elvis. I just can't get over that. You may be able to, but I reserve the right to forever ridicule you for loving the same music as my Mom. [grin]
Solo artists - big difference - Yes I think it's important to differentiate - We can make another poll of Greatest Musical Artists. Then you can include Madonna.
...for pioneering electronic music, setting the stage for hip hop, and being one of the most influential and unique bands of the past 40 years.
-J
Placebo, Rammstein, and Mindless Self Indulgence
Also - Seo Tai Ji and Dir en grey
Rammstein
Nice addition H
I just can't get into Rammstein. Even if I could understand what they're saying, they sound like the satanic guy from a bad horror flick.
I'm all for people liking whatever they want and not bashing on personal taste but I don't see how Rammstein makes a greatest bands of all times list - you might have to preceed that with 'in my opinion of all the music that I like' -- Typically when you make a list like this you include bands that you might not listen to or have ever actually heard. I for example do not like The Beatles but would think it silly not to have them in the top 5 based on influence, sales, and songwriting.
In saying that - MICHAEL JACKSON should be on here along with MADONNA if they aren't solo acts - Pop should be included in this mostly rock thread inless the title of the poll is altered. - Maybe I'm being too picky. Hell let's include Yanni and Anal Blast..
I for example do not like The Beatles but would think it silly not to have them in the top 5 based on influence, sales, and songwriting.
So sales are what makes a band great? Not for me.
Oh, Gorillaz...
What about The Byrds?
Byrds should be on that list for sure. Maybe also the Eagles ? or America ? Such a different style
Or Emerson Lake and Palmer
I know history hasn't quite judged them yet, but how about deftones? Or Stone Temple Pilots? Or are they too new to make it in the greatest of all time?
1) Beatles
2) Kraftwerk/ Organization
3) James Brown/ The JBs
4) Funkadelic/ Parliament
5) Rolling Stones
6) The Stooges
7) The Flaming Lips
8) David Bowie, Mick Ronson Era, including all sideprojects with this same "band" set up.
9) The Velvet Underground, including Transformer Era Lou Reed, which Mick Ronson Produced
10) The Kinks
OK!
Please include; The Smiths, Joy Division, Public Enemy, NWA, De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, Neu, Cluster, Lee Dorsey, Eddie Bo, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, All Chess Recordings, All Motown, Nathaniel Meyer, Daft Punk, Giorgio Moroder, Juan Atkins, Dyrexcia, Bauhaus, Lee Perry, King Tubbys, Beastie Boys, Led Zeppelin, Afrikka Bambatta, The Gories, Wolf Eyes, Metallica, Misfits, The Melvins!
What about the Greatest Live Bands!
With the depth of age variation on Newsvine Im sure there would be funtime anecdotes plus a great overall listing of what "the people" feel are the best live acts ever, or at least the top ten.
1) Rolling Stones
2) Melvins
3) The Orb
4) Kiss
5) Willie Nelson
6) Nirvana
7) Jane's Addiction
8) Aphex Twin
9) De La Soul
10) Ice Cube circa 1990
and so on and so forth
The best (most entertaining) concert I ever attended was actually The Tubes. Also by far the loudest.
Excellent! When was that show? I had heard through the word on the street that the Tubes were indeed one of the loudest live acts. Among those that anecdotally brought the heavy rig includes: Blue Cheer, Kiss, Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, The Melvins, White Stripes and Wolf Eyes.
Early 80s. Saw it in Columbus, Ohio around 82 or 83. I saw a lot of concerts, then, so it's a little hard for me to pinpoint with accuracy. I was thinking that I should put up a story about what concerts everyone has seen, and asking them to rank them-- see who gave the best live performances...
Thats a great idea Iarn. I used to see bands a couple of times a week in the 80's and 90's when I lived in Amsterdam.
Don't remember them all with the same clarity though for some reason.
OK, here we go--
Turn That Crap Down! (Or-- name the best concert you've seen)
(Hmmm... Amsterdam... Lack of clarity... whatever could have been the cause?)
Wolf Eyes
I see that you like your ears to bleed.
While Pink Floyd has been listed in amongst others I figured it might be hard to really tally a vote count for them if they are lumped with others - and really, Floyd deserves a singular nomination.
I dont' care if it is is Floyd with Syd, Led by Roger, or Post Waters - Pink Floyd is the greatest band of all time - Bar None.
of course, maybe my nickname hinted at who I would vote for?
Björk
Johnny Cash
Nine Inch Nails
Nirvana
Pink Floyd
Radiohead
Rasputina
The Clash
The Velvet Underground
The Who
Björk
I was going to throw the Sugarcubes in. Bjork in her pre-goose days...
A Newsvine Experiment: Who Are The Top 10 Greatest Bands of All Time?
Actually, the title should read "Who Are the Greatest English Language Bands since 1960."
What's the difference?
Hey, I submitted some perfectly good German, Japanese, and Korean bands.
Actually, the title should read "Who Are the Greatest English Language Bands since 1960."
Or maybe "Who Were the Greatest English Language Bands Operating Primarily Between 1960 and 1980?"
For my own two cents I will echo previous sentiments for The Cure and The Clash.
And, oh, what the hell, Godspeed You Black Emperor! and/or A Silver Mt. Zion.
I voted for that one.
VERY GOOD POINT - this is a narrow bandwidth of bands - which is OK and should be expected but should also be validated in the title of the poll!
Godspeed You Black Emperor! and/or A Silver Mt. Zion.
More essential post-rock: Slint, Bark Psychosis, Explosions in the Sky
bonnie 'prince' billy
Eric Burdun and the Animals....I haven't seen this group mentioned....and some of their stuff is really great....
also...BS&T....when you think *band*...you really should be thinking of an ensemble of instruments...most rock bands feature drums and guitars....some, like the Animals, will feature keyboards...others horns and reeds....Jethro Tull....?....not that many rock bands feature the flute....Doug Kernshaw?...the ragin Cajin featured the fiddle....what about The Miami Sound Machine? Certainly they introduced more than Gloria Estafan to popular music culture...Flatt and Scruggs?....I'll think about this some more....mass hysteria doesn't define greatness...many consider *The Band* to be great...me? not so much...How about Glenn Miller...oh..his was an orchestra...this subject is wide open....
