A Newsvine Experiment: Who Are The Top 10 Greatest Bands of All Time?

advertisement

In honor of the 5th anniversary of my original Top 10 Greatest Bands of All Time article, I'm leaving it up to Newsvine to tell the world who the greatest bands are this time.

Here's how my list went down:

10. The Doors

9. Van Halen

8. The Police

7. U2

6. Genesis

5. Queen

4. The Eagles

3. Pink Floyd

2. Led Zeppelin

1. The Beatles

There were some complaints throughout, such as the inclusion of Genesis, as well as the exclusion of some bands based on their influence and/or innovation. (i.e. Velvet Underground)

So, I'm leaving it up to you, Newsvine, to nominate and vote for the greatest bands of all time. I figured that this would be the way it would work:

• Nominate the band you think deserves the title of being one of the Top 10 Greatest Bands in the nomination thread below. (You may nominate more than one.) I will close nominations at about 6:30 a.m. on Friday Just closed, at which time I will then create a poll optioning most, if not all, of the nominations, depending on their relevance.

• Once the poll is up, the Newsvine body can vote for which band they think is the greatest band of all time. Voting will be open for about a week when voting will then be closed.

• After the week long voting period, I will write an article listing the top 10 bands Newsvine 'elected'.

Now all you 'viners who want their musical tastes heard have the chance! After you nominate, why don't you share some other bands you enjoy as well?

_______________________________________________________________________________________

Due to so many, nominations are no longer being accepted. And, because of so many of them, I am going to randomly group the bands into groups of 15 for the community to decide who deserves to go on. From there, a new article with the winning bands will then have a poll for you to vote on. After that process hopefully the whole thing will be finished!

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Rage Against The Machine. They brought revolutionary anger to the masses,
and publicised such groups as The Zapatistas, and helped raise awareness of the plight of Leonard Peltier.

The Velvet Underground.

Without the VU, there would be no punk, no glam, no grunge, no alternative, no techno. Modern Rock begins there.

In January 1980 Michael Stipe met Peter Buck in an Athens record store the latter worked in. The pair discovered they shared similar tastes in music, particularly punk rock and protopunk artists like Patti Smith, Television, and The Velvet Underground; Stipe said, "It turns out that I was buying all the records that he was saving for himself."

Um, yep.

Yes, R.E.M. were certainly influenced by VU, but that doesn't mean they're not an important band in their own right. R.E.M. have done their fair share of influencing modern bands, as well.

Yeah, they're important.

My point though is that nobody is as influential as the VU.

REM cites the VU as their major influence. Nine Inch Nails? Their major influence is Bowie, who also cites the VU as his major influence. The Punk movement in the US and the UK are directly traceable to the VU. Some people argue that you can trace the origins of Heavy Metal to the Stooges and the MC5, and guess who they cite as their influence....

And so on...

Well this list isn't for "who's the most influential." Some people would tie it in to greatness, sure, but for some greatness is purely based on quality of music. For others, it's longevity.

Also, it's not like Lou Reed wrote in a vaccuum. He had influences too and going by this metric that would make those artists greater than him.

Thousands upon thousands of bands have made really great music. So what makes some stand out above all others? Influence. Those that changed the course of musical history, influencing all who came after them.

Sure, Lou had influences. Blues, Jazz, Doo Wop. But the stuff he and Cale created transcended all of that. They broke a lot of new ground; invented entirely new genres. They laid the groundwork for virtually everything that came after. There's a reason why more than 6000 artists and bands have covered their songs.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, don't shoot! I just want to make it clear that I'm a huge Velvet Underground fan and I definitely think they belong on the list. But since Dennis had already nominated them, I decided to suggest someone different. I'm not saying R.E.M. are better/more original/more influential than VU, just that maybe they deserve a spot in the top 10...(instead of The Police, perhaps?)

I think it is VERY important to distinguish solo artists from bands on this poll - which would disqualify Elvis, Tom Petty, Dolly Parton, etc...

See, this is where it gets tricky....Tom Petty wasn't really a solo act, originally (and some of the earlier songs were recorded as) they were "Mudcrutch" then they became "Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers" but they were very much a band...they were, with a few changes, the same "Mudcrutch" Gainesville, and once christened Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, they didn't change a member till the late 80s-early 90s.

So at the point the singer leaves we make the distinction? Bad example: Matchbox 20 or Creed could be considered in this list but the career of their singers after leaving could not - Believe me when I say I would not put either of those bands on this list but the concept carries over.

    {"commentId":1246778,"threadId":"185308","contentId":"1143267","authorDomain":"babin"}

      {"commentId":1246810,"authorDomain":"SuperUnspecial"}

Except, that the singer left and Tom Petty took over as singer, not the other way around. It was, for a long time, a tradition to call an act so and so and his band, like Frank Zappa and The Mother's of Invention, or Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band (the last one is a bit too lose to be considered a single band). Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is the same band as Mudcrutch except Tom Petty sings and they might be down a keyboarder or something. If Matchbox 20, rebranded themselves "Rob Thomas and the Matchboxes" it would still be the same band and it would still not be a solo act.

      {"commentId":1246810,"threadId":"185308","contentId":"1143267","authorDomain":"SuperUnspecial"}

        {"commentId":1246815,"authorDomain":"babin"}

So there's a difference in naming the band after the singer while it is still a 'band' and a solo act that has a backing band such as Jimi Hendrix and The Experience. (?) Elvis therefore being a solo act, Tom Petty and the Hearbreakers being a band, Jimi Hendrix being different incarnations of both either voting on The Jimi Hendrix Expereince (or any other incarnation of his 'band') or Hendrix himself as a guitar player.

Van Halen, The Police, Genesis, and The Eagles need to go. Although they were all great in their own right, each of those groups followed on the heels of other bands who paved the way.

Nirvana, The Rolling Stones, Radiohead, and Jimi Hendrix need to be on that list. Innovation and greatness is just rampant in these bands.

This list is also very one-sided, sounds like the daily round up on any classical rock station... what about metal? (sabbath) new wave? (talking heads) funk? punk? garage?

2 other honorable mentions: red hot chili peppers and the white stripes. Still going strong, already have a wealth of creative and gorgeous material.

Definitely no gripes with the beatles, led zepp or pink floyd!

Oh, half a dozen reggae bands, throw in some 10CC, and there you are. I liked the Police, played quite a few of their tunes, but once Sting decided he was gonna do a Van Dyke Parks imitation and get all philosophical, I sorta threw them overboard.

Ok, so you're saying there were like a combination of reggae band and 10CC? Not sure I see how that doesn't make them unique in their own right...I mean, really, EVERY band was preceded by other bands that paved the way, right?

Little 10cc story. They used to mess around with a doodad called a Gizmo, or Gizmotron. Apparently invented by Godley and Creme, the prototype was built by my friend Sarah's dad.

Sarah, who was a little girl at the time, plays the guitar, so they gave her a very nice Fender Strat as a gift. She recently had it valued, $15-20k! Very nice thank you very much.

"John McConnell, then a senior lecturer in Physics at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) assisted Godley and Creme in the development of the prototype. He considered it critical that the instrument retain the natural decay of a note rather than the sharp cut-off often experienced with an electronic synthesizer."

Cool story about the Gizmo. I used to use an Eventide delay. Long ago, after hearing an interview on WNEW in NYC, I befriended Larry Fast, who did keyboards for Rick Wakeman and played on the early Gabriel albums. Based on that friendship, I began my infatuation with Robert Fripp, Brian Eno, MIDI and processed sound.

2.12 – Right. Look at it this way: The Sex Pistols were influential (what's the saying about everyone who attended one of their early gigs went on to start their own punk band?) but were they great? I say no, which is what sparked this flap when I said they were overrated. I think you definitely need to drop kick Genesis off that list and replace that crap with the Clash.

Led Zep's already on the list but imho the Who should rank just behind the Beatles along with the Stones. I would also add the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

Hmmm. Greatest bands of all time? Ellington and Basie's Orchestras better be on the list. The crew that played with Miles on Kind of Blue comes to mind almost immediately as well.

I think someone might also argue for Glen Miller, but I won't go that far.

Just to endorse, the Pixies are at the top of my list.

But I must say that I think of the entire Pixies, Frank Black, and Frank Black & the Catholics catalogs as of one piece: all of it flows from the mind of Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson IV. For my money he is by far the greatest pop songwriter in the history of rock.

In your next article you should define what you mean by "greatest"-- I have my own definition, and I'm not sure it would match up with yours. I will say that there are bands that I like that seem to have stood the test of time, or influenced other bands, or just stand out for their sheer (although sometimes unrecognized) awesomeness.

In the interests of diversifying from the standard Beatles/Zeppelin/Velvet Underground nominations, allow me to throw out some other bands for consideration:

                        • Yes
                        • Rush
                        • Todd Rundgren
                        • AC-DC
                        • Aerosmith
                        • The Kinks
                        • Husker Du
                        • Mountain
                        • Black Sabbath
                        • King's X

Not sure if anyone would agree that they're in the top ten, (I'm not sure they're even all in MY top ten) but they're at least worthy of consideration.

And since you suggested "why don't you share some other bands you enjoy as well?" can I take a moment to pimp the 2007 Newsvine Music Exchange?

I'd go along with Rundgren, Yes, Aerosmith and the Kinks. Not sure about Mountain. This lists are fun but kind of meaningless really. But I'm shocked that no one's mentioned the Amboy Dukes or Mitch Ryder for that Motor City Madness yet. Perhaps a top tens in different genres would be apt. Bowie's also very high on my list.

Black Sabbath just took standard rock harmonies, moved them down a whole note into the Locrian VII to get that weird V and thus was born a whole genre. Ya ha! Take terrible playing, play in an obscure musical mode guaranteed to make everything sound weird, add pretentious Grand Guignol visuals, scream like raped apes and there's Sabbath.

Yes, some of these were on the list, but that's OK, I can weed them out.

The Who most definitely deserves a spot on the list.

Did we all leave out Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix?

I guess that this depends on what factors are used: influence, personal preference, or general acceptance. Each or all could influence me to vote for the best of all time, even if I would not enjoy them personally, or believe that other music is more interesting or better for me. For my tastes and views, most of the bands identified by you and the posts above qualify in at least one of these categories.

Sorry to be so analytical. My bad!

                              Great article and thread.

Dylan doesn't meet my definition of "greatest" and Elvis, while certainly deserving of it... I just can't get behind him as one of the greatest given how much my mother worshiped him. Sorry. I just can't put anyone in my Mom's top ten in my top ten. It'd be downright sacrilegious.

If Dylan doesn't live up to "greatest" then I can't really imagine who would...he is by far the most important to the emergence of rock and roll as we know it now...man, even Zappa was so impressed by him that Zappa feared he'd have nothing left to do if Dylan was successful. Elvis paved the way for white people to listen to rock, but Dylan actually pioneered the folk genre, before Dylan folk music meant only songs that were hundreds of years old. Also, singer-song writer, did not exist before him. And as offensive to my ears as Dylan's voice is, who do you think Lou Reed is trying to emulate when he sings?

If I had a hammer... there'd be no more folk music.

I say this as a man who owns several Dylan albums, including the boxed anthology of his work-- Dylan's inability to sing and/or enunciate disqualifies him as falling into the category of "greatest band of all time", in my opinion. Great song-writer, lousy performer. I'd rather clean my ears with an icepick than listen to an hour of Dylan. Of course, it's just an opinion.

And I'm sorry, my Mom loved Elvis. I just can't get over that. You may be able to, but I reserve the right to forever ridicule you for loving the same music as my Mom. [grin]

I'm all for people liking whatever they want and not bashing on personal taste but I don't see how Rammstein makes a greatest bands of all times list - you might have to preceed that with 'in my opinion of all the music that I like' -- Typically when you make a list like this you include bands that you might not listen to or have ever actually heard. I for example do not like The Beatles but would think it silly not to have them in the top 5 based on influence, sales, and songwriting.

In saying that - MICHAEL JACKSON should be on here along with MADONNA if they aren't solo acts - Pop should be included in this mostly rock thread inless the title of the poll is altered. - Maybe I'm being too picky. Hell let's include Yanni and Anal Blast..

The best (most entertaining) concert I ever attended was actually The Tubes. Also by far the loudest.

Excellent! When was that show? I had heard through the word on the street that the Tubes were indeed one of the loudest live acts. Among those that anecdotally brought the heavy rig includes: Blue Cheer, Kiss, Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, The Melvins, White Stripes and Wolf Eyes.

Early 80s. Saw it in Columbus, Ohio around 82 or 83. I saw a lot of concerts, then, so it's a little hard for me to pinpoint with accuracy. I was thinking that I should put up a story about what concerts everyone has seen, and asking them to rank them-- see who gave the best live performances...

Thats a great idea Iarn. I used to see bands a couple of times a week in the 80's and 90's when I lived in Amsterdam.

Don't remember them all with the same clarity though for some reason.

While Pink Floyd has been listed in amongst others I figured it might be hard to really tally a vote count for them if they are lumped with others - and really, Floyd deserves a singular nomination.

I dont' care if it is is Floyd with Syd, Led by Roger, or Post Waters - Pink Floyd is the greatest band of all time - Bar None.

                                    PINK FLOYD

of course, maybe my nickname hinted at who I would vote for?

Or maybe "Who Were the Greatest English Language Bands Operating Primarily Between 1960 and 1980?"

For my own two cents I will echo previous sentiments for The Cure and The Clash.

VERY GOOD POINT - this is a narrow bandwidth of bands - which is OK and should be expected but should also be validated in the title of the poll!

Eric Burdun and the Animals....I haven't seen this group mentioned....and some of their stuff is really great....
also...BS&T....when you think *band*...you really should be thinking of an ensemble of instruments...most rock bands feature drums and guitars....some, like the Animals, will feature keyboards...others horns and reeds....Jethro Tull....?....not that many rock bands feature the flute....Doug Kernshaw?...the ragin Cajin featured the fiddle....what about The Miami Sound Machine? Certainly they introduced more than Gloria Estafan to popular music culture...Flatt and Scruggs?....I'll think about this some more....mass hysteria doesn't define greatness...many consider *The Band* to be great...me? not so much...How about Glenn Miller...oh..his was an orchestra...this subject is wide open....
